Help Wanted

So how does one break into the wine industry? Work at a wine store? Move to Napa? Read back issues of Wine Spectator? Open your own wine bar? Take classes? Watch Bottleshock and Sideways? Drinks lots of wine and take notes? Start a wine blog? Listen to Gary V? Network with wine industry folk via Twitter? Wait tables at an upscale restaurant? Bribe a winery to hire you in exchange for fudge? Eat your weight in crab meat to get on Letterman and arm wrestle him for a chance to name a new varietal after your favorite Battlestar Galactica character? For Halloween, dress up like "Grape Ape" from the Saturday morning cartoons and loiter at your favorite wine shop? HUH? WHAT? YOU DON'T KNOW?

When you do, leave a comment or send me some fudge.

First, you need to figure out WHAT you want to do in the wine industry. Do you want to make wine? Check out the oenology programs at the various universities. Do you want to market or sell wine? Get a job at a tasting room or retail wine store. Do you want to be a sommelier? Get a job waiting tables and contact the Court of Master Sommeliers. Want to educate people about wine? Take some classes from the WSET, CIA, etc. and take the CWE exam. And above all, no matter what you end up wanting to do, READ. Read everything you can about wine and winemaking. Buy books, go to the library, do internet research. Become the expert.

If you want to talk to somebody about it, feel free to drop me a line at mike@cavemanwines.com or visit my blog at http://cavemanwines.com.

If you are anything like me, then you are interested (slightly obsessed) with the expansive universe of different wines that are out there. Having said that, I would quickly scratch off "making wine" from the list. Distribution, retail or being a sommelier come to mind for a guy like you. Just do it.

It could not hurt to check out winejobs.com on a daily basis.

Cheers,

Matt
